From The Indianapolis Star, Tuesday, August 9, 1921: More than 5,000 loyal South siders gathered for a lawn festival at Garfield Park last night beneath the moonlight and the dazzling gleam of electric arcs, entering whole-heartedly into the carnival spirit. Japanese lanterns and red, white, and blue electric lights transformed the park into a fairyland of revelry where happy voices of children mingled with neighborly gossip of grownups. Given by the South Side Woman’s Club (Original) for the benefit of a flag fund for the new Garfield Park shelter house, festival entertainment featured the Hawaiian School of Music orchestra and included ballet dances by four-year old Helen Eder, wearing a pink costume, and singing by the children from the Protestant Orphans’ Home. Two reels of comedy motion pictures were thrown on a small screen, presented by the Indianapolis recreation department.
