INDIANAPOLIS — Beginning next year, several one-way streets downtown will be converted to two-way traffic, in an effort to slow vehicles and upgrade intersections and traffic signals.
Plans include converting streets to 2-way from spring 2027 to spring 2029 on major thoroughfares, including:
• Capitol Ave. from 21st to 38th streets
• Illinois St. from 21st to 38th streets
• Pennsylvania St. from I-65 North to Fall Creek Parkway S. Dr.
• Delaware St. from I-65 North to Fall Creek Parkway S. Dr.
Other conversion will take place on Alabama St., New Jersey St., East St., and College Ave.
In addition, there are plans to improve Pleasant Run Greenway Trail between Garfield Park and Ellenberger Park, replacing the pedestrian bridge connecting to Pleasant Run Greenway north of Raymond St. and the replacement of the pedestrian bridge at Ellenberger Park.
The Near Eastside Streetscape will also be underway, making improvements from 10th St. from Tecumseh to Rural, and along Rural from 10th to St. Clair. When complete, there will be multi-use path, improved sidewalks and accessible ramps, stormwater management, lighting and intersection realignment. The project will begin in summer of 2027 and be completed the next year.
