Former Mayor, Senator Richard Lugar Passes

INDIANAPOLIS — Richard Lugar, former Senator from Indiana and former Mayor of Indianapolis, passed away April 28 in Falls Church, Virginia. On April 29, the Governor Eric Holcomb and Mayor Joe Hogsett, public servants, and members of the public, held a memorial and wreath laying ceremony on Richard G. Lugar Plaza at the City-County Building.
Senator Lugar was born in Indianapolis on April 4, 1932. He served as the 44th Mayor of Indianapolis from 1968 to 1976, and was a United States Senator from 1977 to 2013. He was the Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2003-2007, and then as the ranking member of the committee from 2007-2013. He was best known for his work in dismantling nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons around the world after the Cold War, and was co-author of the Nunn-Lugar Cooperative Threat Reduction Act. Following his service in the Senate, he established The Lugar Center, a nonprofit dedicated to the awareness of global food securtity, nonproliferation, foreign aid effectiveness, and bipartisanship.
He is survived by four sons and widow Charlene.
