World War 1 100 Years Ago: July 29-Aug. 4

From The Indianapolis News, Tuesday, August 1, 1916: Unless Hoosiers respond generously this week to the appeal for “little luxuries” for Indiana’s National Guard in Texas, the carload to be sent by the Woman’s Press Club of Indiana will be delayed. Club women throughout the state are urged to collect some of the luxuries for the troops such as canned stuff, jellies, smoking material, and tooth brushes. A letter from an officer of one of the Indiana units says that what is need more than anything else is a motion picture outfit. The letter also said, “Singularly enough, the soldiers are calling for candy. The have very little sweet stuff.” Shipments are to be rushed as soon as possible to “the little comfort station” established by the Woman’s Press Club at 36 E. Washington St.
