From The Indianapolis Times, Thursday, June 1, 1916: The Independent Turnverein, 902 N. Meridian Street, is seeking 150 members to form a company for the civilian summer military training camp at Ft. Harrison, and for this purpose a meeting of the membership has been scheduled for this evening. The company would be in keeping with the club’s prime objectives “to develop our members physically and mentally and to educate for the United States active and patriotic citizens by gymnastic exercise and other means.” U. S. Army Captain John J. Toffey, instructor-inspector of Indiana’s organized militia, has very generously offered to assist in giving preliminary instructions to those desiring to attend these camps. A meeting of the Marion Club has also been scheduled to recruit a company. These actions follow the example of the University Club in forming a company.
