From the Indianapolis Star, Sunday, September 19, 1915: The German-American Democratic Club sent a long telegram to President Wilson yesterday in which it registered a vigorous protest against the United States government giving approval to the billion dollar loan of money now being negotiated in behalf of the allied nations which are at war with Germany. The Club said the loan was “unwise, unneutral, and morally wrong,” and contrary to the United States government’s announcement last year that it regarded “the making of loans by American citizens to the (belligerents) as inconsistent with the spirit of neutrality.” The message also pointed out that the European war was “imposing a burden upon all the neutral nations” and if the United States were to loan money to the belligerents, “it would be less able to assist the neutrals.”
