World War I 100 Years Ago: June 26-July 3

From The Indianapolis News, Monday, June 28, 1915: Ft. Benjamin Harrison is regarded by the War Department as one of the best posts in the country, and if Congress approves, it will be improved, enlarged, and provided with facilities for conducting a high grade school of military instruction. Secretary of War Lindley Miller Garrison sees no reason why Ft. Harrison should not be made a finishing school for recruits. His notion is that invaluable instruction in military tactics may be given “raw” soldiers by the officers and men of the regiment regularly stationed at the post. In addition to providing military instruction for enlisted men, the Secretary’s plan is to offer free military instruction to businessmen, students, and others who desire to learn the elements of army life at the Indianapolis army post.
