Solar Panels Installed at Church Dedicated on Solar Sunday

CUMBERLAND — Cumberland First Baptist Church is demonstrating a deeper commitment to energy conservation by installing a 9000-watt, 36-panel solar array on the rooftop of the church,  116 S. Muessing St. The project is being carried out under the auspices of the Eastside Creation Care Network (ECCN), an affiliate of Hoosier Interfaith Power & Light, a state-wide, faith-based movement advocating for energy efficiency and renewal energy among Hoosiers of faith.
The public is invited to a “Solar Sunday” Dedication, Sept. 21, 2014, 11 a.m., on the back lawn of Cumberland FBC following worship at 10 a.m. Church members and community representatives will celebrate and reflect on the milestone of a solar array “showcasing the good sense (cents!) of energy conservation and renewable energy, decreasing dependence on non-renewable energy sources, to achieve a lighter footprint on the earth and free up resources to power ministry,” said Pastor T. Wyatt Watkins.
According to project chair and Pastor T. Wyatt Watkins, “Not only will this solar installation pay for itself in a short number of years, it also is intended to model for other congregations the viability and good sense of investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency. We can help strained congregational budgets by lowering energy costs while also honoring our mandate to care for the earth.”
