From The Indianapolis News, Monday, August 30, 1914: The poor little canary is about to get “its” as a result of the European War. The price of the canary’s favorite seed has more than doubled and is still going up. Canary hemp seed comes from England, and before the war sold for 5½ cents (2013: $1.26) per pound. It is now 12½ cents (2013: $2.87) per pound. One local seed store is uncertain whether it would be able to import its regular supply of canary hemp seed this fall because of the war’s effect on ocean shipping. Another good seed is German rape, but this is even more difficult to import. This leaves canaries almost entirely at the mercy of American millet. American gardeners are also dependent on flower seed from Germany, and there may be a shortage for next year’s planting.
