Girl Scout Exhibit at the Bona

IRVINGTON — Currently showing at the Bona Thompson Memorial Center is an exhibit on Irvington Girl Scouts that features items from the Irvington Historical Society collection and artifacts on loan from individuals and organizations. Although Girl Scouts was founded in 1912, it wasn’t until 1917 that Indianapolis Troop 1 was organized by Anna Ridge at the Irvington Presbyterian Church. Troop 5 was begun at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in 1921. Both troops are still active. One item of special note in the display that is on loan from the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana is a 1930s Girl Scout uniform worn by Jean Huston Springer when she lived at 5447 Julian Ave.
The exhibit was curated by Audrey Gelb, a summer intern with the Irvington Historical Society,  and will run through the end of October in celebration of the birthday of Juliette Low, the founder of girl scouting in the United States. The hours of the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, 5350 E. University Ave. are Wednesdays 1-3 p.m.; Saturdays and Sundays 1-4 p.m.
