From The Indianapolis Sun, Sunday, May 4, 1913: A barefoot burglar who has entered dozens of homes in the past three weeks has police baffled. The intruder leaves nothing but his bare footprints and many burnt matches. Entering a house by a window, he strikes a match to see the layout and quickly extinguishes the flame. After preparing a rapid exit by opening a back door or several windows, he then starts his search for money by going directly to the bedroom knowing there will be change in the man’s clothes. Once in the room, he quickly strikes another match to get his bearings. In over half of the intrusions, the burglar has been frustrated by someone awakening; he then hurries to one of his prepared exits and disappears as a phantom into the night.
