Snowed In

This past weekend’s snowstorm was one too many snows for most of us and for those snow lovers it was joyous. It reminded me of our little blizzard the day after Christmas, when we were all snowed in. At least we had Christmas presents to sort and things to put away. Those of us old enough to remember the Blizzard of ‘78 all know what we did that day or should I say days to fill our time. I remember having a wooden pendulum clock kit that I put together during those days. I worked at Lee Wards and doing crafts was not only my occupation, it was my recreation too. I remember there were a lot of pieces to figure out and I really don’t like following instructions, so it was a challenge. I sanded, stained and glued all the pieces together and got it finished in those 3 days in 1978 when Indy came to a standstill. We didn’t have but a few snowplows in Indy and it was bitterly cold and windy. Do you realize that was 35 years ago?
So this past Sunday, when everyone was at another standstill not knowing if we should venture out I started cleaning house — one of my least favorite things. I found a big piece of upholstery fabric I had stashed away and since I hated the blue fabric on the foot stool, I decided if I could find everything else I needed, I’d finally reupholster that stool.
I went down in the basement and found some foam padding my husband used to use on the bed before he got the memory foam mattress. I knew where the staple gun was and I had staples, so I took the stool apart (even found the Phillips screw driver) and before I knew it I had reupholstered the stool. I can’t believe I haven’t done it before now (I’ve put it off for over 15 years), but usually this time of the year I’m out in the garden raking and cleaning up the winter mess. What a feeling of accomplishment! I have such a long list of things I need to do around the house and many have been on the list for years. One down, one hundred to go!
