• American Legion Post 107 was recently rechartered by African American veterans to be a voice for and to serve the Central Indiana African American community. Originally chartered in 1919 by African American veterans, Post 107 surrendered its charter in the 1970s due to declining membership. The post is being rechartered as the Dr. Joseph H. Ward American Legion Post 107 , 6379 N. College Ave., to again be a voice for and to serve the African American community. The post will publicly install its first leadership team on Sunday, January 11, at 2:00 pm, in the Pershing Auditorium of the Indiana War Memorial, in downtown Indianapolis. The public is invited to attend this ceremony.
• Garfield Park Brewery has announced that they are closing their doors on Saturday, Jan. 31. They have been a cherished part of the community for eight years, and are closing due to personal reasons. Make sure you get down there at 2310 Shelby St. to wish them well in the future.
• Hoo-hoo-Hoosiers! The IU football team absolutely swamped Alabama on New Year’s Day, rolling them over 38-3. They take on the Oregon Ducks on Friday, Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. IU is running a 13-0 record going into the semi-finals.
• Andy Neilsen will be hosting an Annual MLK Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 19 to help restock the pantry at Old Bethel in preparation for food distribution. They will be there from 8 a.m. – noon. Sign-ups are open now at https://tinyurl.com/2b9rmrm7
• Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside (FIDO) had an amazing year in 2025, completing 137 fence builds, 1,027 spay/neuter surgeries, 1,512 home visits, 167 veterinary home visits, and 198 dogs provided a temporary safe haven. They also distributed 81,000 pounds of food to residents for their pets.
• Pothole season is really early this year due to the wild swings in temperature, precipitation, and thunderous vehicles pounding our poor old pavement. Please report them at the Mayor’s Action Center by calling 317-327-4622 Mon.-Wed., Fri. from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Thursday 8 a.m.-2 p.m., 3 p.m.-5 p.m. or online at indy.gov/activity/request-indy. They can’t fill them if they don’t know where the are!
• The Greater Indianapolis Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10 and Sunday, Jan. 11 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets online are $5 at https//tinyurl.com/54hpt343.
• The Harmony Collective will have a rehearsal on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Irvington Presbyterian Church, 55 Johnson Ave. It was originally scheduled for Jan. 6, but was postponed due to illness.
• The City of Lawrence has organized a Forever Young Club for 55+ people who want to get together. Game Days are every Thursday at 11 a.m., Fitness Days are the second Fridays of the month, and Yoga is the last Friday of the month. All activities are free and take place at the Lawrence Community Center, 5301 N. Franklin Rd. This club sounds great for people who want to shake up their routines!
