From The Indianapolis Times, Tuesday, September 1, 1925: Income tax payments of Indiana citizens were opened to public inspection today at the Indiana office of internal revenue collector. The last revenue act allows anyone to see the amount of tax paid by each person in 1925 on 1924 income. Approximately 160,000 Indiana individuals filed returns, 12,000 corporations, and 10,000 partnerships. In Marion County, approximately 29,000 individual tax returns were filed with not more than 5,000 paying taxes of more than $10 (2024: $183). Among local residents paying large sums of tax were Josiah K. Lilly, pharmaceutical manufacturer, $24,797.51 (2024: $452,953), Meredith Nicholoson, author, $1,586.34 (2024: $28,969), and William H. Block, department store owner, $23,286.86 (2024: $425,354). Making smaller payments were Frank “Kin” Hubbard, humorist, $707.01 (2024: $12,914), Hilton U. Brown, newspaperman, $694.52 (2024: $12,695), Mayor Lew Shank $56.27 (2024: $1,023).
