Applause!: Aug. 22-28

• There’s an update on last week’s item in Applause: The Big Red Box Project has found a new home for the box that was vandalized on Ritter. It will be at Downey Ave. Christian Church, 111 S. Downey and will be up and running soon. The boxes at 30 N. Audubon, 2015 S. Arlington, and at Community Hospital (16th and Ritter) are still being stocked. There is also a little blue box  at Beechwood and Arlington.
• Coffee with a Cop will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 27 from 9-10 a.m. at the Starbucks at 2045 N. Shadeland. Drop in for friendly conversation with local law enforcement about concerns or to ask questions.
• Downey Cooperative Preschool & Kindergarten will host a Summer Play Date for children on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. at Ellenberger Park, 5301 E. St. Clair. All are welcome.
• Redefined Hope Boutique is celebrating its rebrand on Sunday, Aug. 24 from 1-5 p.m. at the store, 11850 Brookville Rd. Purchases help to support their mission to empower survivors of human trafficking. They provide residential care, job training, and much more.
• The MSD of Lawrence Township recently held a grand opening for Lawrence Education and Community Center. The facility was built on land donated by the Fort Benjamin Harrison Reuse Authority, and will serve as the central office for the school corporation. It will also serve as a community gathering place. The facility is at 5720 Wheeler Rd.
• There will be a Fire Safety Fair on Wednesday, Aug. 27 at New Life Manor, 1030 Belville. There will be 100 fire safety kits available that include storage bins, first aid kits, and more. If you cannot make it to the fair, please contact lking@jbcenters.org as kits may be able to be delivered. The event will feature Oak Street Health and AARP.
• The Indiana State Museum is hosting the Indianapolis Mariachi Folklore and Festival on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Enjoy performances, a community market, food, and much more. Admission is free to the festival and to the museum, and includes $4 parking validation. The museum is located at 650 W. Washington St.
• Howe High School alumni will gather on Saturday, Aug. 23 on Johnson St. from 5 to 11 p.m. The Irving Theatre, 5505 E. Washington St. will be the place to be if you graduated from Howe. Admission is free but you may be asked for a donation. There will be music by Audio Diner and Blue Alchemy, plus food and drinks.
• Head on down to Indy South Greenwood Airport on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 10 a.m-3 p.m. for a day of aviation fun. There will be helicopter rides, flight simulators, military reenactors, and much more going on. You can make reservations for Young Eagles flights (children ages 8-17) online at www.eaa1354.org. There will be food trucks available.
