INDIANAPOLIS — “Porch pirates,” individuals stealing packages delivered to homes, have been especially active in Indianapolis. During the holiday season, these kinds of thefts dramatically increase as people shop online for gifts. Here are some tips to help you avoid being a victim:
• Track your package: Most delivery services provide tracking information so you can plan to be home when your package arrives.
• Require a signature: This ensures you’ll receive the package directly and it won’t be left unattended.
• Install security cameras: Security cameras can alert you to a delivery and record if someone steals a package.
• Use a smart doorbell: Doorbell cameras can provide a clear image of a thief’s face as evidence.
• Provide delivery instructions: If you can’t be home, provide specific instructions for where you want the package left.
• Ship to a store: If you’re buying from a retailer with a physical location nearby, consider shipping the package there.
• Get to know your delivery people: Become friendly with the delivery people in your neighborhood so they know your preferences.
• Use an Amazon Locker: When you order an Amazon package, you can select a locker near you to pick it up at a convenient time. There are several on the east side, including the Family Dollar on 10th St. near Woodruff Place, and Ross Dress for Less in Linwood Square.
