• The last Irvington Farmers Market will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13 from noon-3 p.m. at Ellenberger Park, 5301 E. St. Clair St. There will be many produce and food vendors, artisans, nonprofit organization booths, music, and lots of community spirit.
• All locations of the Indianapolis Public Library will be closed Oct. 14 for Indigenous Peoples’ Day. City and County offices will be closed for business. The Post Office will also be closed, with no mail delivery. However, trash and recycling schedules will not be affected.
• There will be a special October Taskforce Meeting of IMPD East District on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. at headquarters, 201 N. Shadeland Ave. The speaker will be Tony Lopez from the Office of Public Health and Safety. Everyone is welcome to attend.
• Local law enforcement agencies, in cooperation with the Marion County Traffic Safety Partnership, will conduct DUI checkpoints throughout October of 2024. This is a project aimed at reducing impaired driving-related motorcycle and automobile crashes.
• Three businesses that have contributed a great deal to their communities have closed, or will close, their doors. David Atherton, owner of the Irvington Dairy Queen in Irvington Plaza announced the closure of the popular ice cream shop recently. Tim Harmon, long-time proprietor of Tim & Company’s Another Fine Mess architectural salvage and antique shop on East 10th, announced he and his partners will close their shop by the end of the year. Then, Wheatley’s in Wanamaker closed up for good, after many years of serving the community. We are sorry to see them go, but wish them the best in the future. Please support locally owned businesses whenever you can!
• Indy Art Center will host a Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 19 from noon-5 p.m. at the Indianapolis Art Center, 820 E. 67th St. Admission is free. The Artspark will come alive with art, art activities, food, and lots more. Locally made wares and artisanal goods from over 50 vendors will be featured. Sounds like a great time.
• Indiana Landmarks will host Indiana Freedom Trails Symposium on Friday, Oct. 18 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at their headquarters, 1201 Central Ave. The symposium will focus on how to strengthen efforts to identify and preserve Indiana’s Underground Railroad history and heritage. Tickets are $25 for the general public. Reserve seats in advance at www.indianalandmarks.org or by calling 317-639-4534.
• Expect more delays if you commute on I-65 southbound, as more repairs to roads and bridges continue between West St. and Alabama. The closures will begin on Friday, Oct. 18 and continue through early November, weather depending.
• Looks like Sahm’s Tavern and Sports Bar will be opening soon in Irvington, in the former Black Acre/Scarlett Lane Brewing space next to Jockamo on East Washington. We wish them much success in the community!
• The Benjamin Harrison YMCA and City of Lawrence will hold an evening of fun and food for the Halloween Fest on Friday, Oct. 18 from 6-8 p.m. at the Lawrence Civic Plaza, 5710 Lawrence Village Parkway. You must register in advance by calling 317-547-9622 or visiting INDYMCA.org.
