From The Indianapolis Star, Monday, October 13, 1913: While yesterday was Discovery Day, the first observance in Indiana of the celebrated event since it was made a public holiday by the last session of the legislature will be held today. Last night, the Knights of Columbus gave a public banquet at the Claypool Hotel that was attended by 350 men and women who paid $1 a plate to hear Charles W. Fairbanks praise the Day “…because of the blessings that have come down to us,” and Meredith Nicholson characterize Christopher Columbus as a great dreamer “…who made his dream come true.” Today many public offices will be closed, and this evening the city’s Italian societies will parade through downtown ending at Germania Hall where there will be an informal reception, speeches, and a dance.
