The Colts are rumored to be looking at Phillip Rivers as a possible bridge quarterback until they can find a franchise quarterback through the draft. Rivers is a free agent after 16 seasons with the San Diego Chargers. There’s nothing official from the Colts about this, however. The Horse is also said to be targeting Defensive Lineman Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs. Jones can play tackle or end and is considered one of the DLs in the AFC. He was a big part of the Chief’s drive to the Super Bowl. Jones is only 26 years old and has a past relationship with Colt GM Chris Ballard. The Chiefs are cap strapped and Jones is a free agent. The Colts have lots of cap space and are in need of a good interior defensive lineman. This transaction would make a great deal of sense for the Colts.
Amari Cooper is said to be on the Colts’ radar as a possible match to TY Hilton at wide receiver. Cooper had some big moments with the Cowboys but his price tag may be a bit more than Jerry Jones wants to spend.
Since the Colts have more salary cap space to spent than any other team in the league, there is a lot of media speculation that the team will go on a spending spree when free agency starts. We hear this every year but Chris Ballard has proven to be a bargain hunter, trying to pick up solid but less expensive players to fill holes in free agency. Chris Jones would be a nice addition, however.
Anthony Castonzo is a free agent but he is seriously considering retirement. One of the best all around left tackles in the league, if he decided to keep playing (and we sure hope he does), he more than likely will remain with the Colts. The team is looking to find a starting right guard. The team is also in need of quality depth on the offensive line. That is yet another situation that may be addressed in free agency.
Sporting News has called the Colts 2019 draft class one of the most productive last year. While there were no jump-out superstars as in 2018, there were several rookie players who showed talent and genuine promise last season. Weakside linebacker Bobby Okereke and strong safety Khari Willis are prime examples and both enjoyed impressive seasons.
