“Kim’s Convenience” Comes to the IRT

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT) is producing the hilarious yet tender Kim’s Convenience, presented by Corteva Agriscience. This is a tri-production with Everyman Theatre (Baltimore, MD) and Portland Center Stage (Portland, OR). Kim’s Convenience is directed by cara hinh, IRT’s Associate Artistic Director and will run from Oct. 20 through Nov. 15.
Before it was a beloved hit series on Netflix, Kim’s Convenience was a humorous little-play-that-could at the Toronto Fringe Festival, where it won the Festival’s New Play Contest in 2011 and sold out every show of its eight-show run.
In the world of Kim’s Convenience, the first-generation Korean immigrant Mr. Kim has dispensed acerbic yet fatherly wisdom, history lessons, and ketchup-flavored potato chips for over thirty years from behind his convenience store counter in Regent Park, Toronto. But as condos and box stores remake the identity of the neighborhood, he faces a future filled with uncertainty as the distance between his dreams and his children’s widens.
After its run at the IRT, the play will open at Portland Center Stage in January 2027.
The Theatre will host supplemental programming during the run of each show, including a Community Conversation, featuring community members discussing racial solidarity and tension across minoritized communities; Artist Conversations that provide a behind-the-scenes perspective on the production with the actors, directors, and designers who bring the show to life; an American Sign Language / Audio Described performance; and a Sensory-Friendly Performance.
Tickets are available now for Kim’s Convenience online at IRTLive.com or by calling 317-635-5252. Tickets start at $27.
