From The Indianapolis Star, Saturday, December 9, 1916: The Third Indiana Infantry Regiment returned to Ft. Benjamin Harrison yesterday where it will be mustered out of Federal service having done its “bit on the border.” The regiment’s 771 men and officers are happy to be home and proud of their service; they have no regrets for the sacrifices that have been made and the discomforts that have been experienced. The Third Regiment comes home without leaving a single man behind in the hospital which is a remarkable testimony to the sanitary conditions prevailing at the camp at Llano Grande, Texas. However, one man died from natural causes which would have ended fatally had he remained in civilian life. Returning with the men were all sorts of mascots ranging from wild hogs to horned toads to a live Mexican bull snake.
