From The Indianapolis News, Tuesday, October 10, 1916: Plans by the Federal Government to establish a free labor bureau in Indianapolis for women and young girls were approved today by several of the city’s clubwomen and women interested in the work of the Y. M. C. A. Pledges of support were given by several women including Mrs. Felix McWhirter and Mrs. Grace Julian Clarke in meetings with Anthony Caminetti, commissioner-general of immigration, and Governor Ralston. Girls and young women will be counseled concerning wages paid, length of working day, hygiene, and other conditions prevailing in various industries to enable them to make suitable vocational selections and guide them in desirable industry and to avoid occupations were evil conditions exist. Every effort will be made to meet the demand for women to help in farming and rural communities as well as in the cities.
