This and That

Colts Happenings

The Colts rookie mini camp started this last weekend. Only second round draft choice, safety T. J. Green of Clemson, and third round pick La’Raven Clark offensive tackle from Texas Tech remain unsigned. Among the rookie free agents the Colts are looking at is Notre Dame’s 2016 season’s starting quarterback Everett Golson. Golson was undrafted and not signed to a free agent contract, but the Colts needed throws in the rookie mini camp. Quarterbacks Ammond Olsen of Southern Utah and Blake Frohnapfel of U Mass are also taking snaps. Golson realizes his height, 6 foot and weight, 199 pounds, are among reasons he was ignored by pro teams. The South Carolinian hopes he will catch the attention of some team. The Colts are hoping to have a new contract with Andrew Luck in place before the regular training camp starts.
“Colts at Bat with the Louisville Bats” happens Friday May 20th at the Vic. Colts players kicker Adam Vinatieri and runningback Robert Turbin will join the Indians for a lot of fun and frolic. Both players played baseball in high school and Turbin played two years of college baseball. The fun begins at 5:30 p.m.; tickets are available at the Indians box office.
Former Indiana University offensive tackle Jason Spriggs signed with the Green Bay Packers. Spriggs was the Packs’ second round draft pick.

Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis

The Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis will be run this coming weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course. The usual suspects are entered and Penske driver Simon Pagenard has to be considered the odds-on favorite. He has won the last two events and currently leads in championship points. Thursday, May 12th is  Practice Day, The Champ cars practice from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and again from 3:00 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Friday May 13 the Indy Cars will run a qualifying session from 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. On Saturday the green flag drops to start the race at 3:50 p.m. Pagenard won the premiere event in 2014 driving for Sam Schmidt and Will Power won last year’s race for Penske.
Nyquist Wins the Run for the Roses

The greatest spectacle  in  horse racing, The Kentucky Derby, was run on May 7 and Nyquist was the winner. The horse is undefeated so far and was the favorite according to odds makers. In fact the top four horses according to odds makers came in 1-2-3-4. Nyquist was followed by Exaggerator then Gunrunner and Mohaymen. Nyquist was ridden by jockey Mario Gutierrez and is owned and managed by Paul Reddam and Doug O’Neill, the same team who won the Derby with I’ll Have Another in 2013.
The Triple Crown talk is already starting with odds makers claiming that Nyquist has stronger racing credentials than American Pharoah. But you hear this talk after every Derby. This is Nyquist’s 8th win in 8 races so there is some real reason to believe the horse could take the Triple Crown this year, or at least be considered at this point. Nyquist won the Ellipse Award as the Champion 2 Year Old. His sire is Uncle Mo and his dam is Seeking Gabrielle. He is a fifth generation descendant of Secretariat. He is a cousin of American Pharoah. The next race is the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Park in Maryland on May 21. Post time is 6:18 p.m.
