IRVINGTON — A new and inviting outdoor space in the heart of Irvington is available for community activity following the dedication of the Elmira Annis Civic Plaza located on the grounds of the Irvington Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library, 5626 E. Washington Street.
Made possible by a grant to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation from the R.B. Annis Educational Foundation in memory of Elmira Annis, the outdoor plaza is a beautifully landscaped common space that can be used for music concerts, civic events, library programming, casual strolling or relaxed sitting. Its design by Jeff Mader honors the natural environment by using sustainable materials and includes a rain garden along the Washington Street border.
The plaza is graced by four art pieces created by students at the IUPUI Herron School of Art and Design, including two benches, a sculpture and a tile mosaic.
“This project represents another positive investment in the Irvington neighborhood,” said Sue Kennedy, Irvington Branch Manager. “We are grateful for the gift by the R.B. Annis Educational Foundation and believe that the plaza will be extremely popular, especially during the summer.”
A plaque commemorating the Foundation’s contribution and its commitment to the guiding principles of literacy, education and honoring the natural environment is installed on the plaza.
