Applause!: April 5-11

• That rain/snow/yuck that hit March 30 washed out the Batman’s Birthday car show, which is rescheduled for Saturday, April 6 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Beck’s Service Center, 6025 S. Madison Ave. Looks like there will be a great line-up of cars.
• The Allstate Foundation recently awarded Junior Achievement of Central Indiana (JA) a $50,000 grant to support its Empowering Success Initiative, learning programs for K-12 students to empower young people to plan and prepare for careers of the future. The nonprofit provides educational programs focused on economic empowerment to over 32,000 students in central Indiana each year.
• Thursday, April 4 commemorates the anniversary of Robert Kennedy’s extraordinary speech in Indianapolis when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot. Join the Kennedy King Memorial Initiative, Mayor Hogsett and local dignitaries in a free Commemoration Ceremony at 5 p.m. of the historic speech delivered by Sen. Kennedy in Indianapolis on the night Dr. King was assassinated. Personal comments will be made by Billie Breaux and Jim Trulock, who were in the park 51 years ago. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park is located at 1702 Broadway Ave.
• Friends of Indianapolis Dogs Outside (FIDO) will have a pet supply flea market and boutique fundraiser on Saturday, April 6 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at their warehouse, 1505 N. Sherman (corner of 16th and Sherman in the Charles Brandt building). The sale is a fundraiser for FIDO, an organization that helps educate owners about sheltering their pets outside. They provide a pet food pantry, supplies, and much more to owners in their outreach efforts. Stop by and help out this local organization doing so much good for eastside neighborhoods!
• First Friday highlights include a new show by Beth Guipe Hall at the Harrison Center, 1505 N. Washington St., where local artists Cheryl Lorance, Kristen Dunn, and Mike Phillips will showcase their works. First Friday will be April 5 from 6-9 p.m.
• Beech Grove Main Street is becoming a destination for antiques/collectibles/cool stuff shopping. The latest opening is Y Shop Vintage at 609 Main St. which will have its grand opening April 6 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Yasha from the Irvington Lodge is the owner, and she has a great eye!
• April is hopping with the beginning of outdoor activities, especially the Great Indy Cleanup on April 27 throughout the city. With all the high wind advisories this winter, lots of trash has been blown into fence lines and ditches. Before the big day, maybe we could all go out and pick up around our homes and businesses. Trash bags are cheap and it is great exercise!
