From The Indianapolis Star, Tuesday, November 21, 1916: Yesterday, Mayor Bell and other city officials boarded four automobiles and proceeded to the head of the Pogues Run Drain near New York St and the Lake Erie & Western Railroad. Before an awed assemblage, the dignitaries proceeded to enter the two huge openings to the city’s imitation of Mammoth Cave, disappearing into darkness as the motion picture man ground out his film. Hardly a minute had passed until the automobiles came snorting back out of the entrance; the trip halted upon encountering industrial steam and gases that was being emptied into the sewer. Foregoing the underground tour, the automobiles went overland to White River near Kentucky Av where the huge drain empties into the river; the dignitaries posing for the camera as though they had just made the most unusual automobile trip.
