An Old School World Series

The Curse of the Goat is finally broken. After 71 years the Chicago Cubs are back in the World Series. Harry Truman was president the last time the Cubs were National League Champs. Television was a futuristic novelty. Marilyn Monroe was still called Norma Jean Baker. The baby Boom was just getting underway. Well you get the idea. The last time the Cubs were the world champs was 1908. Yep 08! 108 years ago.
For the Indians, it hasn’t been quite as bad: 1997 was their last World Series appearance, but the American league pennants have been few and far between. Their last championships was in 1948. They were the team the “Major League” movie was based on so they returned to national prominence after a decade of really awful baseball.
You want to know something? I have not watched a full series in I cannot remember when. But this series is old school. I am going to watch every game. I don’t think I am alone. The Cubs and the Indians have brought back fans who have been dormant for many a long year — baseball fans love traditions and happy endings. By the time you read this, they’ll have played the first two games of the series; there will be games on Oct. 28, 29, 30 (if needed) at 8 p.m.

Automatic Adam Sets the Record

The NFL’s oldest player set a record last weekend. Adam Vinatieri has now kicked 43 straight field goals, bypassing Mike Vanderjagt’s 42. Vanderjagt was also a Colt when he set that record. The Colts beat the Tennessee Titans to gain their third win of the season. They now stand at 3-4.The Titans scored after a 13 play drive which Horseshoe defense played about as sloppy and ineptly as they ever had. It took some last minute heroics by Andrew Luck and Jack Doyle to pull the fat out of the fire. Robert Mathis fumble return for a touchdown was icing on the cake. The 34-26 score was not indicative of how close the game really was. A bad team always seems to have a great deal of key injuries. They also seem to get called for a lot of stupid penalties. This  description seems to fit the Colts to a “T” right now. Adam Vinatieris’ record setting season is one of the team’s few bright pots. The Colts will host the Kansas City Chiefs this coming Sunday, Oct. 30.
