“Peace Dove” Tours Libraries

INDIANAPOLIS — On Monday, September 15th, Marion County Sheriff John Layton and The Indianapolis Public Library CEO Jackie Nytes visited The Indianapolis Public Library Brightwood Branch (2435 N. Sherman Dr.) to kick off The Peace Dove Project Tour.
The “Peace Dove” — a custom metal sculpture made out of firearm parts was created by Ryan Feeney, an Indianapolis Firefighter and the founder of Indy Art Forge. The artwork will serve as a memorial to victims of criminal violence in Marion County. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for the destruction of firearms used in the commission of crimes and supplied Feeney with the fragments of destroyed firearms to create the “Peace Dove.”
By circulating the maquette (small scale model) of the Peace Dove, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and The Indianapolis Public Library are making this powerful work of art more accessible to Marion County residents and patrons of the selected local library branches. This partnership is a continuation of the partnership between the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and The Indianapolis Public Library formed to distribute free gun locks to the community last April.
The sculpture will be on display  at the Southport Library (2630 E. Stop 11 Rd.) Sept. 22 – 26, the Pike Library (6525 Zionsville Rd.) Sept. 29 – Oct. 3, before the public unveiling at Central Library on Oct. 7 at 10 a.m.
