100 Years Ago This Week: Dec. 13-20

From The Indianapolis News, Thursday, December 18, 1913:  Dr. Herman G. Morgan, city sanitarian, is warning every city milk distributor that the sale of “manufactured” milk as cow’s milk, unless properly labeled, is prohibited and violators will be promptly prosecuted. The sale of manufactured milk as fresh milk is regarded as one of the most daring frauds that has been practiced in recent years.  Although manufactured milk resembles cow’s milk in taste, color, and smell, the board of health fears there is a vast difference in the digestive quality. It is extremely hard to detect any differences between milk made from powder and water and cow’s milk, so special and frequent laboratory analysis of the city’s milk supply will be conducted to detect any efforts to sell a manufactured product as fresh milk.
