From The Indianapolis Star, Wednesday, October 8, 1913: The sun shone down in its rich October glory on the many colored leaves falling gently on Lockerbie Street yesterday morning as 3,000 pupils of the Indianapolis public schools and hundreds of tots with their parents greeted the Hoosier Poet, James Whitcomb Riley, on his 60th birthday. Seated on his front lawn surrounded by flowers and flags, Mr. Riley returned the well wishes of the children with a word of thanks and a jovial wave of his hat as they passed by on the sidewalk in front of him in groups of fifty dropping their original verses of congratulations in a box and receiving in return a souvenir booklet with a new verse especially written for them by Mr. Riley.
