From The Indianapolis News, Thursday, May 22, 1913: More than 30,000 citizens lined the streets of downtown this afternoon to see 2,400 members of the Indiana Department of the Grand Army of the Republic (G. A. R.) pass in parade. With bands playing and flags waving the five divisions wound their way down Meridian St from University Park, around the Circle to E. Market St, south on Pennsylvania to Washington St, west to Illinois, north to New York, and east to Delaware where they disbanded. A number of veterans, too feeble to march, followed in automobiles. Like the passing of a sacred and hallowed image, the heroic marchers steeping valiantly even in their decrepitude was a spectacle that brought tears of gratitude to the eyes and stirred the soul of the onlookers.
