Tyler the Tiger is Indiana’s Big Cat

Right now, Greencastle, Indiana is home to the state’s only undefeated college basketball champions. The DePauw University Lady Tigers with Head Coach Kris Huffman went 34-0 in their regular season schedule including going 16-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play. They followed up by defeating Wisconsin-Whitewater 69-51 to take the NCAA Division III Women’s National Basketball Championship. Tyler the Tiger, the team mascot, is roaring with pride, and so should the rest of us.
DePauw University was founded in 1837 as Indiana Asbury University and was established  and supported by the Methodist Church. It was named after the first American Bishop of the Methodist Church, Francis Asbury. Although originally chartered as a men’s school, Asbury started admitting women in 1867. In 1884, the school changed its name to DePauw after noted Indiana businessman and philanthropist Washington C. DePauw, who had given the school a substantial financial endowment.
The 2012-13 Lady Tigers were led by Sophomore Guard Savannah Trees, and Juniors Kate Walker, Ali Ross, and Alex Gasaway. Senior Forward Elli Pearson and Junior Forward Alison Stephens led the Tigers in rebounding.
The Lady Tigers Head Coach Kris Huffman has been at DePauw since 1993 and has 466 wins with 106 losses for a .820 percent winning average. This is actually the Lady Tigers’ second D-III national basketball title. They were the NCAA champs in the 2006-07 season with a 31-3 record. So hats off to the Lady Basketball Tigers of DePauw University.

IU Blows the Big Ten Title

The IU Big Red, Coach Tom Crean goes into the Mid-West Regionals as the top seed, but they got hammered by Wisconsin 68-56 in the Big Ten Tournament, which doesn’t bode well for their chances to advance to national championship play. It was the twelfth straight time they have lost to the Badgers. They still have the number 3 ranking in the AP national title poll but they lost the Big Ten Title to Ohio State. They meet LIU Br/JMU the sixteenth seed for round one of the tourney. The Butler Bulldogs have the sixth seed with a 26-8 record. They will play eleventh seeded Bucknell Thursday night.
On a final note, the Colts acquired safety LaRon Landry in free agency from the New York Jets. Landry made the Pro Bowl last year so this a huge upgrade for the Big Blue secondary which was a trouble spot for the Colts last season. They also added former Bengal offensive guard Donald Thomas to the roster and resigned restricted free agent cornerback Cassius Vaughn along with Darius Butler and Jerrod Butler.
