From The Indianapolis Star, Wednesday, October 13, 1915: The board of school commissioners voted against the proposal to have Bible study made a part of the Indianapolis high school curriculum. Former Indianapolis mayor Caleb S. Denny and Thomas C. Day, a prominent lay churchman, actively supported the Bible-in-the-schools idea. Although compulsory teaching of the Scriptures was not included, it would be an elective with high school students. Bible study would not be in the schools, but examination questions would be prepared by school authorities. School board members were of the opinion that to admit Bible study would open the way for much opposition owing to the divergent religious views represented in the schools, and all were agreed that teaching the Bible is not objectionable, provided the teaching is done where there is a unanimity of views on its interpretation.
