From The Indianapolis News, Thursday, March 25, 1915: There is a new bug in town and the “bugologists” do not know his name. He has been here for two or three weeks and he has formed a close acquaintance with many persons all over town. He is an “onery” bug; “bif, bing” he hits a person first with a sore the throat, then with painful swollen glands in the back of the neck, and next in the ears. Sometimes he goes even further and strikes at the heart. It appeared first among the children in some of the schools. Dr. Herman G. Morgan of the city board of health is making bacteriological tests to ascertain the exact nature of the bacteria. The slight epidemic of this new disease has not been serious yet, but it is likely to spread.
