INDIANAPOLIS — The son of an Indiana world heavyweight champion, six successful amateurs making their professional debuts and a light heavyweight ranked 269th in the world are among the 24 boxers slated for the Feb. 27 pro card in the Knights of Columbus’ McGowan Hall, 1305 North Delaware Street.
It is the seventh K of C show promoted by Kristie and Cedric Johnson in their effort to revive pro boxing in Indianapolis. Scheduled are 52 rounds of boxing.
Middleweight David Thomas (10-4) of Evansville, son of Danny Thomas who was named the World Boxing Organization’s heavyweight champion in 2010, will take on Indianapolis’ Vance Garvey (9-16) in one of two scheduled six-rounders. Garvey is one of five Indy boxers on the card.
The six soon-to-be former amateurs, all Golden Gloves champions, are featherweight Tyrone Jones of South Bend; middleweight Billy Vaughn of Columbus, Ohio; light heavyweights Cody Groves of Fort Wayne, Muhammad Adams of Cincinnati and Tony Mahomes of Indianapolis, and heavyweight Anthony Gomez of Tinley Park, Illinois.
Ranked 269th is Anthony Sims (2-0) who a year ago was fifth light heavy in the world and No. 1 in the U. S. amateur ratings with a 188-13 won-lost record. He will meet Groves in a four-rounder.
Weigh-ins are scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Friday on the fifth floor of the Embassy Suites. Saturday doors open at 7 p.m. with the first bout at 8 p.m. Tickets are $40 general admission and $60 ringside.
