From The Indianapolis Star, Thursday, February 4, 1915: A force of more than 100 men began yesterday in cleaning the streets of snow and slush under the direction of the citizens’ employment committee. The men were taken from the employment bureau registry, on which 3,000 names appear, the most needy ones being given the preference. Those who have large families will be given three days’ work a week and half of the pay will be in provisions. The plan is to change the list of workers each day. The employment of the men in public work was made possible by the City Council in a special appropriation of $10,000 (2013: $226,975.08).
