INDIANAPOLIS — At approximately 9:26 p.m. on July 5, officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 3400 block of Forest Manor on a report of shots fired.
When officers arrived, they approached a group of unidentified subjects in the alley near this location. As officers approached, the suspect opened fire on the two officers. IMPD officers immediately returned fire, striking the suspect.
During the exchange of gunfire 21 ½ year-veteran IMPD Officer Perry Renn was struck. Officer Renn was rushed by EMS to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition. At approximately 9:58 p.m. Officer Renn died of his injuries. The suspect was also injured in this incident and identified as 25-year-old Major Davis Jr. of Indianapolis. He is preliminarily charged with murder.
“This is a sad day for the IMPD family and the community as a whole”, said Chief Rick Hite “Please keep Officer Renn’s family in your prayers. We will remain vigilant as we continue to take care of one another and the city in the days and weeks to come.”
Mayor Greg Ballard and Governor Mike Pence ordered all flags to be flown at half staff to honor Officer Renn.
The officer served in North District.
There will be a visitation/viewing for Officer Renn on July 10 from 2-8 p.m. at Crown Hill Funeral Home, 700 W. 38th Street. Funeral services will be held at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse, 125 S. Pennsylvania St., on July 11 at 11 a.m. Both events are open to the public.
