INDIANAPOLIS — After the Indiana Historical Society terminated sponsorship, Indiana Humanities has announced that it will become the state affiliate for National History Day in the state.
The Indiana Historical Society suffered a significant cut of state funding for maintenance and operations in exchange for ownership of the land beneath its headquarters in 2025. The Society laid off 11 employees who were in charge of exhibits, education, and library services.
The national academic program engages middle- and high-school students in historical research and competitions. The program serves more than 5,000 students each year.
Students research historical subjects and present their findings. Winners advance through local and regional competitions to state and national contests.
The cuts followed a 2025 state budget deal that gave the Historical Society ownership of the land beneath its Indianapolis headquarters but ended approximately $1 million in annual state support for maintenance and operations.
