Last Thursday (August 27th) evening the IMPD East District were hosted by NEW Quantum Realty Group (5555 E. Washington). East District Commander Mike Leepper spoke about the East District’s success and challenges. It’s the biggest district in Indianapolis. From downtown east to Cumberland, north to 56th & Shadeland and south to Brookville Rd. is a massive area. Two hundred officers in 4 patrol shifts cover the area. So when you hear on the local TV stations about a crime on the “eastside” it’s because it’s the most populated area in the city.
So many don’t report a crime. As you have all heard if “you see something, say something”. If something is happening at the moment don’t hesitate to call 911 (Every Call is Important).
They talked about how safe Irvington actually is statistically. Questions were also taken from the audience.
Also attending and giving their perspective about the area were 3 officers who do special Community Engagement Programs. They ride motorized bikes (donated by the community) to build strong, authentic relationships with those who live, work, and visit the district. They engage with the community to help stop crime before it starts. From neighborhood outreach and youth programs (like Boys & Girls Clubs). They also do presentations in schools on how to stay safe. The police department does not pay for all the extras they do. When you hear about “Shop With a Cop”, Backpack Giveaways, or Trick or Trunk at Halloween that is all through donations to their Community Engagement Fund. The Fund is managed by the Indy Public Safety Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works closely with Indianapolis public safety agencies to strengthen programs and community partnerships. Your generous, tax-deductible donation will help IMPD East District positively impact hundreds of youth and families.
