Blue Line Construction Will Close Parts of Washington St.

INDIANAPOLIS — IndyGo’s work on the Blue Line, its third Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line, will close parts of Washington Street in the coming weeks.
The first closure along Washington Street from Belmont Avenue to Harding Street will last for approximately six months, and will start on or after Tuesday, Sept. 2. This closure is needed to construct new storm sewer trunk lines.
The second closure at the intersection of Washington Street and Sherman Drive is also scheduled to begin on or after Tuesday, Sept. 2. This will be a two-week, full intersection closure by Citizens Energy Group to relocate utilities.
The Blue Line will run 24 miles, connecting the Indianapolis International Airport to the Town of Cumberland via downtown Indianapolis along I-70, Holt Road and Washington Street. The line is scheduled to open for service in 2028.
Westbound lanes between Belmont Avenue and Harding Street will be closed to through traffic. Motorists driving westbound will detour around the closure using Harding Street, I-70 and Holt Road. One eastbound lane will remain open, maintaining local access to residences and businesses along this portion of Washington Street.
Drivers on the east side for westbound traffic will be diverted at Emerson Avenue and eastbound traffic will detour around the closure at Southeastern Avenue. Northbound traffic will be diverted at Southeastern Avenue to Emerson Avenue and southbound traffic will detour around the closure at 10th Street, also using Emerson Avenue.
