INDIANAPOLIS — As of Jan. 1, 2025, every cat and dog owner in Marion County must ensure that their pet has a microchip implanted with a registered ID number readable by a standard microchip reader.
Animal Care Services offers microchipping services for your pet. You can go to the ACS office, 2600 S. Harding without an appointment during business hours (Mon.-Wed, Fri.-Sun. 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; Thurs. 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m.). The fee is $10. You must bring your photo ID as well as your pet’s most up-to-date rabies vaccination record and proof of DA2PPV or FVRCP vaccinations. Dogs must have received their vaccinations if they are older than 3 months. Cats must have received their vaccinations if they are older than 3 month. Cats must be confined to a carrier in the building. Call 317-327-1397 or visit indy.gov/activity/acs-microchipping.
Veterinarian offices may also provide microchipping services. Check with your vet.
Also effective Jan. 1, is the Marion County Unaltered Animals Registry, requiring dog owners to register any altered dog (not spayed or neutered) over 6 months old annually, unless a veterinarian provides certification that the dog cannot be spayed or neutered. The registration is free, and available online at the ACS Web site, indy.gov/agency/animal-care-services.
