INDIANAPOLIS — National Night Out, a program that helps bring law enforcement and the community together, will be held the evening of Tuesday, August 2. Many neighborhoods have organized informal block parties and cookouts to celebrate. Everyone is asked to turn on their porch lights for the evening.
IMPD will be celebrating with the John Boner Neighborhood Center from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Fitness and Learning Center, 727 Oriental Ave.
Established in 1984 and sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, the project began by having neighbors turn on their porch lights and sit on their front porches. About 2.5 million residents in 23 state participated in that first venture. Today, and estimated 38 million residents in 16,000 communities take the time to participate in National Night Out.
