From The Indianapolis Star, Thursday, November 6, 1913: Taxicabs, transfer wagons, broken down trucks, electric and gasoline propelled vehicles of all descriptions are swarming the streets carrying passengers to and from the business district as a result of the street car strike. Every available vehicle is in service, but the demand is greater than the supply. Not for ten years have so many bicycles been seen on the streets. The police announced that reports of bicycle thefts have been unusually numerous and that many automobiles have been reported stolen. Thousands of citizens are walking many more miles than usual, and the medical profession has sought to cheer weary pedestrians with the news that the general public health will be greatly improved on account of the increased number of miles traveled on foot by the people each day.
