From The Indianapolis Star, Tuesday, March 30, 1920: An enthusiastic gathering last night at Tomlinson Hall of legionaries and citizens of Indianapolis formally welcomed the American Legion and its national headquarters to Indiana and Indianapolis. Mayor Charles Jewett, in extending the city’s welcome, said, “I believe that Indianapolis was selected because the delegates to the national convention felt that the Hoosier spirit and Hoosier patriotism were 100 per cent American.” Franklin D’Oiler, national commander, expressed appreciation for what Indianapolis had already done in helping the Legion locate in the city. The meeting opened with a concert by the combined bands of the three city high schools — Technical, Manual and Shortridge. Musical numbers were given by contralto soloist Miss Mabel Trask and the Indianapolis Male Chorus. Ralph W. Hills, Community Service song director, led the audience in a community sing.
