From The Indianapolis Star, Thursday, February 19, 1920: The Gold Star Roll of Honor for Marion County has been compiled for the official Indiana War History and the list contains 379 soldiers and sailors and three women nurses who gave their lives in the World War. This is the largest Roll of Honor of any county in the state. Librarian Charles E. Rush of the Indianapolis Public Library supervised the work. Ellis Searles, the official reporter, employed every available source of information to make the list, but some names may have been missed and every man, woman and child in Marion County is asked to read the published list and send in any correction. The Roll of Honor contains the names of 111 soldiers and sailors who died in action and 163 who died of disease including the three nurses.
