From The Indianapolis Star, Wednesday, September 10, 1919: The American Legion starts its national membership campaign Monday and during the week hopes to enroll 1,000,000 new members. Remster Bingham, Marion County membership chair, said efforts will be made to enroll at least 25,000 of the 30,000 soldiers, sailors, marines, and nurses from the county who served in the war. Bingham said,” Every known service man will be solicited personally and provided an explanation of the purpose of the American Legion. It is not a political organization. It is open to every man of every creed, politics, color or sex, regardless of rank or where stationed during the war, who was properly enlisted and honorably discharged.” Presently the American Legion has 350,000 members divided into 3,900 posts nation-wide. The Marion County District has seven posts and new ones are being organized.
