INDIANAPOLIS — The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is awarding $3.88 million to the City of Indianapolis. HUD’s Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP) will help build local systems and support a wide range of housing programs including rapid rehousing, permanent supportive housing, transitional housing, and host homes.
“The nearly $4 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will go a long way in supporting our efforts to wipe out homelessness among one of our most vulnerable populations,” said Mayor Joe Hogsett.
The City of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development’s Community Investments team will work with the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention & Prevention (CHIP) to utilize this funding to support a variety of housing options and services for young people under the age of 25 who are experiencing homelessness.
CHIP staff will serve as the lead for day-to-day operations of the YHPD, which is a two-year program. In the initial planning months, the team will work with an assigned consultant to update the existing Coordinated Community Plan to Prevent and End Youth and Young Adult Homelessness to gain HUD approval. Once accepted, implementation of proposed housing and services for youth and young adults will begin. YHDP will allow for a truly collaborative effort led by young people who previously experienced homelessness working alongside all youth-and young adult-serving organizations in the community.
