From The Indianapolis Star, Sunday, June 3: Noting the presence of the military training camp at Ft. Harrison, Mayor Bell addressed the police department at a general roll call saying that it was his aim to make Indianapolis clean of all vice which might tend to destroy the moral standards of the soldiers. “Indianapolis is now in the limelight as it is the center of one of the greatest military camps in the country. An effort is being made to obtain sites for an additional camp, and the clean, moral condition of a city will have much to do with this choice.” The mayor understood that a number of women of bad reputations had contemplated coming to Indianapolis, but they would not attempt to come if the police proved vigilant. Keeping women from the saloons will be strictly enforced.
