From The Indianapolis News, Wednesday, April 25: Pre-military training for elementary and high school students in the Indianapolis public schools will begin with the opening of the fall term. The school commissioners approved a plan last night to develop and increase the physical efficiency of boys and girls so that they may be better prepared for future military service. The plan submitted by Dr. William A. Ocker, director of physical education and school hygiene, makes physical training compulsory for all high school students. The exercises will consist of marching and gymnastic drills which conform to the applicable parts of the United States infantry manual. Exercises with the rifle for junior and senior high school students will be substituted for wand exercises. Weekly military drill for boys will be held on a designated day for one hour after school dismissal.
