From The Indianapolis News, Wednesday, November 29, 1916: While preparations are under way throughout Indianapolis for a proper celebration of Thanksgiving Day, the weatherman predicts the holiday will be cold and crisp with bright sunshine. Despite Thanksgiving dinners this year likely being the most expensive every, hundreds of shoppers crowded the city market today going away with loaded baskets. Charitably inclined people of Indianapolis have not forgotten the poor, and many charity workers will make a special effort to make Thanksgiving a happy day for many who are in want. The religious significance of the holiday will be observed by union services held among the Protestant churches in many parts of the city. Rev. John Martin of the Irvington Presbyterian Church will give the sermon at the Irvington union service. Thanksgiving will also be remembered at the Catholic churches.
